Un mot du cinéaste
En janvier 2000, équipé seulement d’une caméra Hi8 et d’un enregistreur numérique, j’entrepris le tournage d’un documentaire à propos de mon voisin, Jimmy, un homme qui avait de grandes attentes face à ce nouveau millénaire qui s’ouvrait devant nous. Quatre ans et plus de 200 heures de rushes plus tard, Jimmywork est l’aboutissement de cette longue et tortueuse cavalcade.

In January 2000, equipped with only an analog Hi8 camera and a DAT recorder, I started shooting a documentary about my neighbor, Jimmy, a man who had big plans for the new millennium. Four years and 200 hours of rushes later, Jimmywork is the outcome of this journey.

Simon Sauvé quitte l’université au début des années ’90 pour un boulot d’assistant monteur. Il travaille quelques années sur de nombreux projets autant en fiction qu’en documentaire. Devient chef -monteur en 1996, depuis il a monté dramatiques, télé-séries et documentaires d’auteur. Il rencontre Jimmy Weber en automne 1999 et entreprend le tournage de JIMMYWORK en Janvier 2000. JIMMYWORK est le premier long-métrage de Simon Sauvé.

Simon Sauvé dropped out of film school to become assistant-editor. He worked several years on many features and docs. Got promoted to editor in 1996, cut dramas, auteur docs and TV Series. Met Jimmy Weber in fall of 1999 and started shooting JIMMYWORK in January 2000. JIMMYWORK is Simon Sauvé’s first feature.

Fondateur d’ATOPIA, Pascal Maeder a étudié le cinéma à l’Université Concordia dans les années 80. Au cours de la décennie suivante, outre le long métrage Motel, qu’il a produit et réalisé, Maeder a produit six pièces originales avec Dummies Theatre, une compagnie théâtrale qu’il a cofondée en 1992. En 1999, il produit le film Between the Moon and Montevideo à La Havane. En 2000, il fonde ATOPIA et produit SPIT: Squeegee Punks In Traffic (2001); El Ring (2002); A Silent Love (2003) et Jimmywork (2004).

Head of ATOPIA, Pascal Maeder studied cinema at Concordia University in the eighties. In the nineties, along with the feature film Motel, which he produced and directed, Maeder produced six original plays with Dummies Theatre, a company that he co-founded in 1992. In 1999, he produced the film, Between the Moon and Montevideo, on location in Havana. In 2000, he founded ATOPIA through which he produced SPIT: Squeegee Punks In Traffic (2001); El Ring (2002); A Silent Love (2003) and Jimmywork (2004).

Depuis sa fondation en 2000, Atopia a produit plus de trois long-métrages : SPIT-Squeegee Punks in Traffic (2001), A Silent Love (2003) et Jimmywork (2004). Tout en poursuivant son plan triennal initial, Atopia maintient une étroite collaboration avec les cinéastes canadiens en continuant à développer, produire et distribuer de nouvelles œuvres indépendantes. Depuis septembre 2004, Atopia est devenue une société verticalement intégrée, s’impliquant dans ses projets du développement jusqu’aux ventes internationales en passant par la distribution en salles à travers le Canada et les États-Unis.

The Company
ATOPIA is a Montréal based studio. Since its foundation in 2000, Atopia has produced three feature films: SPIT-Squeegee Punks in Traffic (2001), A Silent Love (2003) and Jimmywork (2004). Following an initial three-year plan, Atopia continues to collaborate closely with Canadian filmmakers to develop, produce and release independent films. As of the fall of 2004, Atopia has become a fully integrated company, handling projects from Development through World Sales and Theatrical Distribution in North America.

À l’aube de ses 50 ans, Jimmy, se retrouve à un carrefour de sa vie. Ivrogne professionnel et magouilleur à ses heures, pour lui c’est maintenant ou jamais, il veut se sortir de cette médiocre existence. Se faisant passer pour un grand producteur américain, il élabore une campagne publicitaire pour promouvoir un rodéo du nord du Québec. Le cinéaste Simon Sauvé documente sa démarche créative mais une suite d’imprévus transformeront le film en making of d’un crime. Jimmywork est un portrait éclectique d’un véritable crasseux. Le récit se développe initialement dans le cartier du Mile-End à Montréal mais nous transporte éventuellement au cœur du Far-Est québécois dans un road movie frénétique. Un hybride mêlant film noir, biographie et cinéma vérité. On the eve of his 50th anniversary, Jimmy, a gambler-drinker and hopeless schemer, is a man in crisis. For him it’s now or never—The time has come to escape from mediocrity. Pretending to be a big time American producer, Jimmy plans an elaborate TV ad campaign to promote a Northern Quebec rodeo extravaganza. Filmmaker Simon Sauvé documents his whereabouts but a chain of events transforms the film into the making of a crime. Jimmywork is an eclectic portrait of a genuine bad ass. The story unfolds mainly in the Mile-End neighborhood of Montreal yet takes us through the entrails of Quebec’s Far East on a live action road movie. A cross between Film Noir, Biopic and Cinema Vérité.
