description

As part of our CUFF 2023 Retrospective, see ADAM'S APPLES (2005) as a Double Feature with THE GREEN BUTCHERS (2003), including a live-zoom Q&A with Director Anders Thomas Jensen after the first film (THE GREEN BUTCHERS).

From CUFF alumnus Anders Thomas Jensen (MEN & CHICKEN, RIDERS OF JUSTICE) and starring his frequent collaborator Mads Mikkelsen, this 2005 comedy is a modern religious fable about belief and the struggle between good and evil. Adam, a neo-Nazi, is sent on community service to a vicarage. Here, the minister Ivan gives Adam the task of baking an apple pie with the apples from the tree growing in front of the church. Meanwhile birds, worms and lightning attack the apples. Ivan believes it is the Devil testing them. Adam believes it is God, because perhaps evil doesn't exist at all.

DIRECTOR'S BIO
Anders Thomas Jensen is a screenwriter and director from Denmark. In high school he met Tomas Villum Jensen and together they made the short ERNST & THE LIGHT (1996), which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Short Film, Live Action. Jensen’s second short film, WOLFGANG (1997) was also nominated, and in 1999, he won the Academy Award with ELECTION NIGHT. In 2000 he made his first feature film, FLICKERING LIGHTS, followed by THE GREEN BUTCHERS (2003). After ADAM’S APPLES (2005), he took a 10-year break from directing, before returning with MEN & CHICKEN (2015), and then RIDERS OF JUSTICE (2020). Jensen often collaborates with the actors Mads Mikkelsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas.

press for Adam's Apples (2005)

"This Danish comedy, like most of that country's dramas, is dark, dark, dark. The film's humor offers an odd blend of subversively sly narrative mixed with bursts of sudden, sharp violence and goofy slapstick."
- Austin Chronicle
"Winner of 14 different awards, it comes from the gifted Anders Thomas Jensen, who excels in black comedy."
- Urban Cinefile
