A man named Alderson awakens in a mysterious cube-shaped room with hatches on each wall, ceiling, and floor. Each hatch leads to similar interconnected rooms. He enters another room, but is killed by a razor wire trap. To avoid Alderson's fate, his remaining counterparts, each of them gifted with a special skill – a cop, a math whiz, a building designer, a doctor, an escape master, and a disabled man – join forces in an attempt to break free from the bizarre and deadly labyrinth of cube-shaped rooms.
CUBE was Vincenzo Natali's directorial debut, and became success worldwide, breaking box office records for a Canadian film. CUBE received five Genie Award nominations, and won Best Canadian First Feature at the Toronto International Film Festival. As part of the retrospective CUFF is also showing NOTHING on Sunday, April 21.
DIRECTOR'S BIO
Vincenzo Natali is a Canadian film director and screenwriter, known for writing and directing science fiction and horror films such as CUBE (1997), CYPHER (2002), NOTHING (2003), and SPLICE (2009). Raised in Toronto, Natali attended Royal St. George's College, the film programme at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute and the Canadian Film Centre. He was eventually hired as a storyboard artist at the Nelvana Animation Studios. CUBE was Natali's directorial debut, which he also co-wrote. The film became a success worldwide, breaking box office records for a Canadian film. CUBE received five Genie Award nominations, and won Best Canadian First Feature at the Toronto International Film Festival. For his film SPLICE, Natali was nominated for "Best Director" at Splatcademy Awards. He has also directed several shorts and television episodes.
