The Feeling That The Time For Doing Something Has Passed
United States, 2023: 87 minutes: Alberta Premieredescription
Joanna Arnow’s hilarious comedy, executive produced by Sean Baker, follows a 30-something New York woman as time passes in her long-term casual BDSM relationship, low-level corporate job, and quarrelsome Jewish family.
A complex look at the mosaic of experience that informs who we become, the indie comedy is divided into chapters named for the different men Ann (Arnow playing a comedic version of herself), sleeps with or considers dating. While we watch her struggle with the perils of HR and office life, as well as time spent with her parents (also played by Arnow's real-life parents), the narrative feature directorial debut by this rising talent, who also wrote the film, had its world-premiere in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight and earned her a nomination for the "Someone to Watch Award" at the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards. Settle in for a mix of lewd, mundane, dry, awkward, and cringe, with a funny, deadpan lead performance.
