About the film: DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS (2002)
Dir. Stacy Peralta, Documentary, 91 min
The high-flying "vert" (i.e. vertical) style of skateboarding is now such a defining element of international youth culture that it's hard to believe it wasn't invented by a skateboard manufacturer. In fact, it was invented in the street, in a place called Dogtown, "where the debris meets the sea." In DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS, Stacy Peralta, one of the original Dogtown skaters, along with photojournalists Craig Stecyk, has interwoven these vintage images of skaters and skate spots of the past with new interview material to create an eyewitness account of the birth of modern skateboarding. DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS is the story of a group of accidental revolutionaries, gifted kids who inadvertently inspired an American pop culture phenomenon.

About the venue: Springboard Performance's containR
Located at the heart of Calgary, near the Sunnyside CTrain station, containR is designed, developed and curated by Springboard Performance. It’s a pop-up arts and culture hub for people of all identities and ages championing local artistic and creative ideas. containR features an Art Park, performance series, community instigations and mural installations made of retrofit shipping containers. It is a vibrant meeting place, providing access to art and encouraging grass roots community engagement.

Register for free tickets, or show up on the day. If you make a donation when RSVPing, you'll be entered in a draw for a CUFF picnic blanket!
